Face Oils: When and How to Use Them

Face oils often get a bad reputation — many people worry they will clog pores, cause breakouts, or make skin greasy. The key is knowing when to use face oils and how to apply them properly based on your skin type.

What Are Face Oils?

Face oils are concentrated blends of plant-based oils rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins. Unlike moisturizers, which contain water and emulsifiers, oils work mainly to seal in moisture and protect the skin barrier.

They don’t replace hydration — they lock it in.

When Should You Use Face Oils?

1. After Water-Based Products

Face oils should always be applied after water-based products like toners and serums.

Why?
Oil acts as a seal. If applied too early, it can block hydration from reaching the skin.

Correct order:
Cleanser → Toner/Essence → Serum → Moisturizer → Face Oil

2. Best Time of Day to Use Face Oils

  • Nighttime: Ideal for most skin types

  • Morning: Optional, only if your skin is very dry and you use sunscreen on top

At night, your skin focuses on repair, making it the best time for nourishing oils.

3. During Seasonal Changes

Cold weather, dry air, or frequent air-conditioning can weaken your skin barrier. Adding a face oil during these times helps prevent moisture loss and irritation.

How to Use Face Oils Correctly

Step 1: Use Only a Few Drops

More oil does not mean better results.
Most people only need 2–4 drops for the entire face.

Warm the oil between your palms before pressing it gently into the skin.

Step 2: Press, Don’t Rub

Instead of rubbing, press the oil into your skin. This improves absorption and reduces irritation.

Step 3: Mix with Moisturizer (Optional)

If oils feel heavy, mix 1–2 drops into your moisturizer for a lighter finish.

Choosing the Right Face Oil for Your Skin Type

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic oils:

  • Jojoba oil

  • Squalane

  • Grapeseed oil

These oils help balance sebum rather than increase it.

Dry or Dehydrated Skin

Choose richer oils that seal moisture effectively:

  • Argan oil

  • Rosehip oil

  • Marula oil

These support the skin barrier and reduce flakiness.

Sensitive or Mature Skin

Gentle, antioxidant-rich oils work best:

  • Rosehip oil

  • Camellia oil

  • Evening primrose oil

Avoid heavily fragranced or essential oil–based blends.

Common Face Oil Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying oil on dry skin without hydration

  • Using too much product

  • Skipping sunscreen in the morning

  • Assuming oils cause breakouts (often misuse, not the oil itself)
