How to Make Homemade Castor Oil for Hair Growth

Castor oil has been used for generations as a natural remedy for stronger, thicker hair. It’s rich in fatty acids, especially ricinoleic acid, which helps stimulate the scalp, reduce shedding, and support hair growth over time. While most people buy castor oil in stores, you can also make a simple homemade version using natural ingredients at home.

What You Will Need

  • Castor seeds (½–1 cup, depending on how much oil you want)

  • Water

  • A pot or pan

  • A baking sheet

  • A mortar & pestle or blender

  • Fine strainer or cheesecloth

  • A clean glass bottle

(If you don’t have access to castor seeds, it’s better to buy ready-made cold-pressed or Jamaican black castor oil — because extracting from seeds is the traditional method.)

Step 1: Roast the Castor Seeds

Spread the castor seeds on a baking sheet and roast them over medium heat for about 10–15 minutes. This helps release natural oils and creates the darker, richer color commonly associated with Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

Step 2: Crush the Seeds

Once roasted, let the seeds cool completely.
Use a mortar & pestle or blender to crush the seeds into a coarse powder. The finer the powder, the easier the extraction.

Step 3: Boil the Mixture

Add your crushed castor seed powder into a pot and pour in enough water to cover it.
Simmer on low heat for 1–2 hours. As the water evaporates, the castor oil will begin rising to the surface.

Avoid boiling too strongly — slow simmering works best.

Step 4: Skim & Strain the Oil

Allow the mixture to cool.
You’ll notice a layer of oil floating on top. Skim this oil off carefully using a spoon.

Pour it through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove any sediment.

Step 5: Store the Oil

Transfer the strained oil into a clean glass bottle. Store it in a cool, dark place.
Your homemade castor oil can last 3–6 months.

How to Use Your Homemade Castor Oil

1. Scalp Massage (2–3 times per week)

  • Use 1 teaspoon of castor oil (you can warm it slightly for easier application).

  • Massage gently into the scalp for 5–10 minutes.

  • Leave on for 30 minutes to 1 hour, or follow with a warm towel for deeper absorption.
→ Best for promoting hair growth, thickness, and reducing shedding.

2. Edges Treatment (Daily or 4–5 times per week)

  • Use a tiny drop — castor oil is very thick.

  • Apply directly to thinning edges or hairline.

  • Use daily or at least 4–5 times per week for visible regrowth.
→ This is the most popular method for repairing thin edges.

3. Oil Blend (For easier use + faster absorption)

Castor oil is thick, so blending makes it easier to spread.

  • Mix 1 part castor oil with 1–2 parts of a lighter oil such as jojoba, grapeseed, almond, or argan.
Example: 1 teaspoon castor oil + 2 teaspoons jojoba oil

  • Apply 2–3 times per week.
→ Helps reduce heaviness, prevents buildup, and improves absorption.

4. Overnight Mask (1–2 times per week)

  • Use 1–2 teaspoons of castor oil (depending on hair length).

  • Apply lightly from scalp to ends, focusing on dry or damaged areas.

  • Leave overnight and wash out in the morning.
→ Ideal for dry, frizzy, or breakage-prone hair.

Homemade castor oil takes time but gives you a pure, natural product you can trust. It’s perfect for anyone wanting stronger, thicker, healthier hair the natural way.
